How to tell if your bra fits correctly.
- It should fit snugly around. You ought to be able to fit one or two fingers under the band comfortably. If you are pulling down the back strap or pulling up on the shoulder straps throughout the day, then the band size (the # part of your bra size) is too big.
- Can you fit 1 or 2 fingers comfortably? If yes, then the band is right size.
- If you’re having a hard time putting one finger under the band, then move the hooks to the loosest fitting eyes. If it is still tight on the loosest fitting, then try on one in the next up band size.
- If the band can easily be pulled away from your body, or if the band rises up your back, then go down one in the band size.
- If you are wearing an underwire bra, the wire that comes up between the breasts should lay flat (or as close as possible) to your breast bone. If you are wearing a bra with no underwire, you should have two separate breasts, not just a «one big boob».
- If the bra is a soft cup bra, you shouldn’t have any extra, gapping fabric.
If the bra is a molded cup you shouldn’t have any extra room in the cup.
Your breast should completely fill the cup. If it is gapping and the band feels fine, then go down in the cup size. - You don’t want to be spilling out of the cup — not from the top, bottom or sides. If the band feels fine then go up a cup size.
- If you raise your arms up (do this a few times), the bra should stay against your body, not lifting up or off. If this happens try a few things;
- adjust the shoulder straps by loosing them
- Pay attention to the band. Is it too tight? Or too loose? Or just right?
- If the band is just right, and adjusting the shoulder straps didn’t work, then go up a cup size.
- If you have a small frame or are petite, and you find a bra that fits the band, and you don’t quite fill the cup and you have already tried the next cup size down and it’s still not quite right — OR if the you have the «right» size, the band fits and you fill the cup, but the wire is poking your underarms, then try a Demi bra. A Demi style bra is different from a full coverage bra. The Demi has less wire, by about an inch or more.
- Try on different styles of bras. Every style fits and fills different and can «shape» your breast differently.
- If your bra fits correctly, it should NOT be painful or uncomfortable to wear.
Bandeau Bra
A bandeau bra is a simple piece of clothing worn as band across the breasts. It is like a strip over the breasts. It is kind of the mix of strapless bra and tube top.
Usually bandeau bras are made of stretchy fabric. Normally, they don’t have fastening in the back instead you put them on over your head. They also come with detachable straps like many strapless bra, so you can wear with or without straps.

This provides little or no shaping and is very less supportive. Hence, it only works well for smaller breasts. These bandeau bras are great for those who have just started to wear bra. Sometimes, they have built-in cups, which is suitable for the small breasts.
If you are wearing tube dress and have bigger breasts and need more supportive bra then you can wear classic style strapless bra instead of bandeau bra.
A classic bandeau bra is just a strip of stretchy fabric but these days you can find bandeau bras with underwire and paddings that will give more lift. They often come in sensational colors and prints and they are real comfortable for smaller breasts.

Finding the band size
There is NO consensus in these measurement methods (unfortunately). Different opinions exist. So no matter what measuring system you use, you still need to try the garment on to be sure it actually fits. It’s worth noting though that a too large band size is one of the most common errors women make in bra fitting.
Have someone measure around your chest with a tape measure, just under your breasts, and around the back. Make sure the tape measure rests flat on the skin and goes straight across your back.
The «old» advice has been to add 5 inches to this measurement — and then that is your band size (also called chest size). HOWEVER, adding only 2-3 inches (instead of 5) works far better for most women. You can even try not adding any to the measurement you get, and just using that as your band size. This is because the band is elasticated, and because the bra band needs to fit snugly so it can provide about 80-90% of the support for the breasts — and then the straps (shoulders) only carry about 10-20% of the load.
If you end up with an odd number, go up to the next even number, since bras usually only come in even-numbered band sizes.
As always, try the bra on, and let that be the final determining factor. If the bra band rides up on your back, the band is too large (loose) and you need to go down in the band size.

Convertible/Multiway Bra

Push-up Bra
Push-up bra like it’s name, is designed to push up and uplift the breasts and increase the cleavage. The angled cups of push-up bra containing the padding push the breasts inwards and upwards and towards the center of the chest, which maximizes the cleavage.
They contain padding made of foam or rubber, sometimes gel-filled pads. The difference between padded bra and push-up bra is that padded bra just provides the breasts volume while push-up bra lifts the breasts providing more cleavage along with breasts volume.

Usually, push-up bra is a demi-cup bra. Also they are like plunge bra as the cups join low between the breasts so that you can wear low cut dresses and show off your cleavage if you want.
This bra is great if you have small breasts and want to make them look bigger. The padding in the bra can make your breasts look couple cup sizes larger than they really are. Padding is built-in in some and some have removable padding.

Like the name says, the strapless bra doesn’t have straps. It relies on an extra-wide band for the support. Strapless bra is designed for wearing with bare-shoulder outer garments like halter dresses or tube dresses. It may have the rubberized or silicone beading inside the top edge of cup to keep the bra attached to the breasts. Some convertible bras can be turned into strapless bras by removing the straps.
Since the band provides all the support, go down on band size and up on cup size.
Best for: Subtle and small breasts

General advice about getting a bra fitting:
- The band size (or chest size) is the number part of your bra size. The cup size is the letter part. EX: if you are in a 36 B, then 36 is the band and B is the cup.
- You are not going to get as good of a measurement as someone else would by measuring yourself. Let someone else measure you.
- A measurement CAN be done over the bra you are wearing AND over your T-shirt. If you plan on getting fitted, don’t wear a thick shirt like a sweatshirt or sweater.
- If you have large and/or sagging breasts, then when the person is taking your band measurement, you should pull up on your bra’s shoulder straps so that she can get the measuring tape under your breast for an accurate measurement.EX: I had 2 different sale ladies «fit» me a year ago. One did not have me pull up on my straps and told me I was a 44DD. The size seemed to work but I was messing with my bra all day long and the wire kept poking me. I went back and a second lady «fitted» me and had me pull up on my straps and came out with a 40 DDD, which turned out to be my «true» size. The wire stopped hurting me and I stopped messing with my bra while I wore it.
- If you wear a bra with padding or stuff your bra, then you are not going to get an accurate measurement. If you plan on getting fitted, wear a bra without padding.
- Not all fittings will tell you the «right» size, but will give you a good place to start at usually.
- Try on different styles of bras. Every style fits and feels different and can «shape» your breast differently.
- Don’t rush trying on bras. Really pay attention to how they fit and feel. Go bra shopping when you know you have the TIME for it. Many women have had to take up to an hour or more trying on several different sizes and styles to find the bra that gave them the fit and feel they wanted.
- If your bra fits correctly, it should NOT be painful or uncomfortable to wear.

Cancer scare[edit]
Written by Sydney Ross Singer and Soma Grismaijer, the 1995 book Dressed To Kill: The Link Between Breast Cancer and Bras asserts the hypothesis that bras cause cancer. This conclusion was reached through a variety of unscientific methods.
After publishing Dressed to Kill, Singer and Grismaijer wrote Get It Off!, another crank book that talks about the dangers of wearing bras, and a series of other pseudoscience books in which they claim that sleeping on a tilted bed can prevent Alzheimer’s disease, that frequent defecation and urination can prevent many conditions such as prostate enlargement and menopausal symptoms, and that high blood pressure is a «major medical scam» because «blood pressure measurements can be whatever the doctor wants them to be.» so they are irrelevant and made to fake illness by big pharma
Other books such as The Prevention and Complementary Treatment of Breast Cancer (1996), by Dr. med. Michael Schacter (of the Schacter Center for Complimentary Medicine), and The McDougall Program for a Healthy Heart (1996), by Mary and John A. McDougall, claim that bras block lymphatic drainage and therefore preventing toxins from leaving the body which therefore can lead to cancer.
Scientific receptionedit
- The US National Cancer Institute states that bras have not been shown to increase a woman’s risk of breast cancer.
- The American Cancer Society says, «There are no scientifically valid studies that show wearing bras of any type causes breast cancer.» According to the American Cancer Society (ACS):
Their study was not conducted according to standard principles of epidemiological research and did not take into consideration other variables, including known risk factors for breast cancer.
- The U.S. National Institutes of Health states, «Breast implants, using antiperspirants, and wearing underwire bras do not raise your risk for breast cancer.»
- In 2000, as a follow-up to misreporting of a UK study, British health professionals stated that bras cause no increase in breast cancer risk.
- A study conducted by the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center found «no aspect of bra wearing, including bra cup size, recency, average number of hours a day worn, wearing a bra with an underwire, or age first began regularly wearing a bra, was associated with risks» of breast cancer. The study included detailed studies of women’s lifestyle and bra-wearing habits and found no correlation between bra use and cancer.
The authors’ proposal that bras block the lymphatic system which leads to accumulated toxins and cancer was likewise contradicted by scientific study. The National Institutes of Health examined cancer rates among women who had their underarm lymph nodes removed as part of melanoma treatment: «The surgery, which is known to block lymph drainage from breast tissue, did not detectably increase breast cancer rates, the study found, meaning that it is extremely unlikely that wearing a bra, which affects lymph flow minimally if at all, would do so.» This is is wrong based on existing data, both for standard and underwire bras. Of course, our favorite Gwyneth Paltrow promoted this myth and other pseudoscience as well.
Further research has confirmed that bras do not lead to cancer.
T-shirt Bra
T-shirt bra is designed without seams so that bra won’t be visible when worn with tight t-shirt. It is also called as seamless bra.

This bra has seamless, pre-formed cups containing foam and other lining, which helps define and hold the cup’s shape, even when it is not worn. Since the cups are seamless, they are perfect choice to wear with anything where seams show through. The layer of foam also covers the outline of the nipple making this bra popular for the same reason.
